The (UP) is a private
Catholic University specifically affiliated with the
Congregation Of Holy Cross , like its better known sister school, the
University Of Notre Dame . UP is located in
Portland ,
Oregon in the North Portland neighborhoods of
St. Johns and University Park. Founded in
1901 , UP has a student body of about 3,000 students. UP has excellent Engineering and Nursing programs. The UP mascot until 2004 was Wally Pilot.
It is the only school in Oregon to offer a College of Arts & Sciences, a Graduate School, and schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing.
UP is perhaps best known for its outstanding
NCAA soccer program by
Clive Charles , who started coaching the men's team in
1986 , added the women's head coaching job in
1989 , and headed both teams until his death in
2003 . The women's team has won the NCAA Division 1 National Championship in 2002 and in 2005.
Other intercollegiate sports at UP include basketball, baseball, volleyball, track, cross country, tennis, and golf. Though none of these teams has the standing of the soccer program, the Men's Cross Country program has won 27 conference titles in a row and has come into its own nationally over the past few years. UP previously sponsored football program that was disbanded due to lack of funding.
