The ('''UOIT'''), located in
Oshawa, Ontario ,
Canada opened in September of
2003 . With an orientation towards Science and Technology, UOIT is Ontario's fastest growing university, and is the province's first fully laptop-based university. UOIT offers a range of undergraduate programs, and graduate programs are in the advanced planning stages.
Canada's newest post-secondary institution, UOIT, was created as a public, career-focused, research-intensive university emphasizing science and technology. The university became a legal entity on . UOIT's slogan is "A brand new university for the 21st century."
UOIT accepted over 900 students in
2003 and total enrolment was over 3000 in the
2005 -

2010 . The residences for UOIT are Simcoe Village and South Village.
UOIT is located at a single campus on a 400 acre (1.6 km²) property, which it shares with
Durham College .
Trent University also offers a full-time program on the campus.
Construction on the university's first buildings began in 2002 on the 47-hectare (117-acre)
Oshawa campus. The university's facilities currently include the library (shared with Durham College) and two academic buildings, all set in a pedestrian-friendly academic village with an outdoor quadrangle and connected, covered walkways. The university will grow with enrolment, which is expected to reach 6,500 by 2010. A $25-million engineering building is slated to open in the fall of 2006, followed by the new Automotive Centre of Excellence in 2007. A multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion of the Campus Athletic Centre will also be completed in 2007.
- Master of Information Technology Security (a graduate professional program in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology)
Graduate programs in the advanced planning stages include:
- MSc in Modelling and Computational Science
- MASc in Mechanical Engineering
- Over 3,000 students are enrolled at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology for the 2005-2006 academic year. Enrolment is expected to rise to 6,500 students by 2010.
- The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is Ontario's fastest-growing university.
- The University of Ontario Institute of Technology will generate an estimated $1.09 billion in personal income between now and 2011 through construction, capital projects, employment, and other operating expenditures. Most of the income will be spent locally on housing, taxes, and goods and services.
- The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is the province's only laptop-based university. Every student uses a current model IBM laptop to access course materials, conduct research, make presentations and communicate with faculty. Students are required to pay an additional fee for the lease of the laptop, software, and technical support, the amount being equivalent to about 30 to 40 percent of tuition costs, or an additional $1,580/$1,765, depending on the program.
- UOIT uses one of the world's largest geothermal well fields to help heat and cool its buildings. Made up of 384 holes drilled 213 metres (700 feet) into the ground, the sophisticated system takes advantage of the earth's relatively constant temperature to provide a stable, low-maintenance and efficient energy source.
- UOIT guarantees a residence space to all qualified first-year students. Rooms and suites in our Simcoe Village and South Village residences offer amenities and accommodation for over 1,300 students.
- The solar car racing team is one of UOIT's newest clubs. The university offers a wide range of student activities and a full selection of athletic facilities, including our year-round, professional-grade Campus Tennis Centre.
- The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is a member of SHARCNET, one of the world's most powerful high-performance computing consortia. High-performance computing, sometimes called supercomputing, allows scientists to use extremely powerful computers to accelerate the pace of their research.
- UOIT's brand new campus library features space for 160,000 volumes on four floors. The library's rotunda includes a ground-floor café and a two-storey reading room, complete with a fireplace.
- Students at UOIT are currently designing and building their first solar powered car (http://www.uoitsolarcar.ca).
- Dr. Douglas Holdway of the UOIT Faculty of Science holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Toxicology. He is one of the world's leading experts in ecological toxicology. Holdway's research focuses on the impact that very brief, or "pulse," exposure to toxic compounds has on aquatic life.
