The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is one of five to train technicians and managers for the textile industry) and the Lowell Normal School (founded in 1894 to train new teachers), respectively.

The University consists of four campuses. The North Campus (formerly Academic North) is the Science, Mathematics and Engineering campus. South Campus is the Liberal Arts Campus. And the East Campus (formerly Residential North) contains four dormitories and a recreational center. The dormitories and recreational center are adjacent to the Tsongas Arena , and the Wannalancit Mills complex. The West Campus, located in Chelmsford, Massachusetts , is home to UML's Demonstration School.

The University has a Division I Hockey team, which plays in the Hockey East conference. The River Hawks home ice is located at the Tsongas Arena.

UMass Lowell is home to WUML radio station.


NOTABLE DEPARTMENTS AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

UMass Lowell is well-known for its science and engineering programs and is often considered the "Poor Man's MIT ." It was the first university in the US to offer a Bachelor's Degree in Plastics Engineering , and it is one of a few public universities in the US to offer a degree in Meteorology .


ATHLETICS

UMass Lowell athletic teams compete in a variety of sports. Men and women compete in Division II , with the exception of men's hockey, which competes in Division I . The men's sports include Baseball , Basketball , Cross Country , Golf , Ice Hockey , Track And Field , and Soccer . The women's sports are basketball, cross country, track and field, Field Hockey , soccer, Softball , and Volleyball . Past champions include the 1988 men's basketball team, the men's cross country team, the ice hockey team (three times), and the 2005 field hockey team.
