HISTORICAL AND MODERN REFERENCES

  • In 1847 the original University of Louisiana was established as a public university in New Orleans. Previously known as the ''Medical College of Louisiana'' since 1834 , the college added law and collegiate undergraduate departments to become the ''University of Lousiana''. The name was revised in 1884 when the university was reorganized into the private ''' Tulane University Of Louisiana '''. The university was transferred from state control and renamed in honor of benefactor Paul Tulane , a wealthy merchant who bequeathed more than $1 million to endow a university for the city where he had earned his fortune. Today, it is commonly referred to as ''Tulane University''.

  • In 1999 two public universities changed their names to each become a city-identified ''University of Lousiana'':

TRIVIA

  • Xavier University Of Louisiana (est. 1925 ), a private university, bears ''University of Louisiana'' as part of its official name. The "of Louisiana" portion differentiates it from other universities named ''Xavier''.

  • On April 27 , 1984 the Louisiana Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities voted by a 17-1 margin to drop the “Southwestern” from then-named University Of Southwestern Louisiana (USL). The name ''University of Louisiana'' only lasted a few days. In May of 1984, the Lousiana Board Regents, encouraged by Louisiana State University supporters fearing USL expansion, took the issue to district court, asserting that only the state legislature could rename state universities. District Judge William H. Brown agreed with the plaintiffs and stripped the ''University of Louisiana'' of its new name.

  • ''University of Louisiana'' was a fictional university in the 1988 film Everybody's All-American .
