Of the various groups and empires in the Star Fleet Universe , the United Federation of Planets is the one which would be the most familiar to those used to the Canonical Star Trek Universe. HISTORY The Federation was founded in Y4 (Y1 being first contact between Humans and the Vulcan s, who had already been in contact with other races. Y1 has been given an assumed date of 2400 . The Founding planets were Earth (Humans), Vulcan , Rigel ( Rigellians ), Andor ( Andorians ), and Alpha-Centauri ( Alpha-Centarians ). For the most part, the Federation government worked only to function in areas that required interplanetary cooperation. Each member operated and maintained its own Colonies , Fleet , and Police . As time went by, more and more areas fell under the aegis of the Federation government, most notably the creation of Star Fleet in Y71, though most planets maintained their older ships under new National Guard provisions. Notable events in the Federation: Y21 The Federation encounters the Orions . Trade relations are quickly established. Y40-Y46 '''First Federation-. The war is fought with Non-Tactical Warp (a.k.a. Sublight ) technology and the Federation fleet consists of a wide variety of ships from the member states. Y45 The Orions join the Federation, but the treaty includes a number of clauses that would come back to haunt the Federation. Y62 The Federation launches the first Tactical Warp (capable of fighting at Warp Speed s). Earth ships are the first to receive the new technology, but the technology is soon sold to all member states. The other Races of the Galaxy soon develop the technology on their own, with the notable exception of the Romulans. Y71 The Federation forms Star Fleet . Y79 The Federation launches the ''Republic''-class ships, the immediate forerunner of the famous ''Constitition''-class. Y84 First contact with the Tholian Holdfast , who do not wish to open relationships. Y85 First contact with the Klingon Empire , though the Vulcans had known of them. The Klingons are embroiled in a war with the Kzinti and do not wish to provoke this new neighbor initially. Aggressive colonization of the border areas by both sides and the sheer power of the Federation Economy cause a steady decline in the relationship. Y88-Y92 '''First Federation-Kzinti War''' begins when the Kzintis attack the Federation. Klingon advisors serve on a number of Federation ships to advise them on how fight against the Kzinti. While the Kzinti make initial gains, the Federation was able to re-establish the borders. Y102 Noting the problem of an undefined Klingon border, the Federation declares that its border would be a circle 4,750 parsecs from the center of the Primary Member Zone. This is announced as a major peace initiative, for it is declared that they would never seek to further expand the border, but the Kzinti and Klingons are not impressed. Several Klingon and Kzinti colonies were within the established border. Y110-Y111 '''The First Klingon-Federation''' war begins as the Klingons try to reclaim lost territory, but are unable to make any major gains. Y113 Sixteen Orion ships and their crews mutiny and disappear. These are believed to be the founding elements of the Orion Pirates . Y126 The Federation launches the ''Constitution''-class Heavy Cruiser. Six older ''Republic''-class ships are upgraded, but the cost is nearly the same as a new ship. Y130 Aurora, the keystone of the Federation's core-ward expansion, vanishes in an ion storm. It would be nearly a century before contact with them is established from the Omega Sector . Y136-Y142 '''The Second Federation-Kzinti War''' Y154 '''Second Federation-Romulan War.''' The Federation first encounters the Cloaking Device and first see the face of the Romulans. Y156 '''Second Federation-Klingon War''' Begins, but ends shortly after over Organia . Y157 A Gorn -Federation 'War' begins and ends after two young captains fire first and face embarrassing questions later. Despite interference from the Romulans (who had been in a century long series of wars with the Gorns), a treaty is signed and soon the Gorns become the Federation's closest ally. Y159 Seeking to prevent the Klingons from major gains in the Four Powers War (Klingons and Lyran s versus the Kzinti and Hydrans ), the Federation makes some mock moves to support the Kzintis. The Klingons respond by signing the Treaty of Smarba with the Romulans, providing them with modern warp technology and starships. Y171-Y185 After the disappearance of the Organians , the Klingons launch a massive attack on the Federation, bringing them into the General War . The war would devastate the entire sector, but in the end, when the Organians return to restore peace, the borders have effectively remained the same. Y186-Y190 In an effort to “protect the galaxy from itself,” the ISC launches a massive invasion of the Neutral Zone s of the sector, seeking to separate the potentially warring parties. They had reached the far ends of known space when the Andromedans attacked. Y190-Y202 '''The Andromedan Invasion ''' began as the Andromedans, who had until then been minor nuisances, launched their full-scale invasion of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Andromedans would be able to serious threaten every race of the known galaxy, to the point of destroying the LDR . Federation-Klingon cooperation became the groundwork of Operation Unity, a multinational assault on the Andromedan base in the Lesser Magellanic Cluster . Y225 End of recorded Star Fleet Universe history. GOVERNMENT The Federation Assembly, consisting of delegations from all member races, sends proposals to the '''Federation High Council''' consisting of the ''Full'' members of the Federation. The Federation government is mostly concerned with interplanetary relations, and leaves the day to day running of the various members to themselves. Only the High Council can amend the Federation Charter, and issue directives to '''Star Fleet'''. MEMBER RACES Full members

STAR FLEET The Federation is defended by the United Star Fleet, which also has oversight of the Survey ships exploring new territory. Ships of the Star Fleet are often known for being not quite as good as equivalent ships fielded by races such as the Klingons and such as a result of being the first ones to field examples of a new class. But the Federation economy is strong enough that given enough time, it can overwhelm any enemy with large numbers of new, powerful warships in time of war. Naval Archetecture Federation ships nearly universally consist of a distributed collection of parts including a main hull in the shape of a saucer, and one to three large, cylindrical engines. Larger ships also have a secondary hull, generally an irregular cylinder that contains the ship's engineering functions. The main or 'primary' hull is capable of separating from the rest of the ship, and can act as a 'lifeboat' in emergency situations. As such the impulse engines are located on the saucer to grant a tiny amount of combat mobility as well as the ability to generate a non-tactical warp field. This arrangement is best typified by the classic Federation and Tug classes use (externally) identical saucer sections and engines. The destroyer mounts a warp engine where the secondary hull would be on a CA, and the tug mounts a pair of engines to either side on the primary hull and a hard point to attach cargo pods where the secondary hull would normally be. The slightly later Dreadnought design, on the other hand, uses three of the same type of engine (with the third mounted on top of the primary hull), and a similar configuration to the heavy cruiser, but with a completely redesigned saucer and secondary hull. The Frigate , being a much smaller design, uses a similar-looking, but smaller, saucer attached directly to a pair of diminutive warp engines. The later (new) Light Cruiser design uses a saucer slightly smaller than the heavy cruiser's with a built-up area in back which attaches to two smaller warp engines that are mounted above the hull; the design fills much the same niche, and is schematically similar to, canon's Miranda-class , but has a much different physical layout. The even later War Destroyer class uses an, again, slightly smaller hull, with three frigate engines attached (two above and one below). Federation vessels are typified by having more extensive lab facilities and general crew areas, with powerful, but limited numbers of weapons. They tend to have less power and be less maneuverable than the comparable classes fielded by other races. FURTHER READING EXTERNAL LINK |
