Typhoo is a brand of Tea in the United Kingdom . It was launched in 1903 by William Sumner of Birmingham , England . HISTORY In 1863 , Sumner published, ''A Popular Treatise on Tea'' as a by- product of the first trade missions to China from London . In 1870 , Sumner founded a pharmacy/grocery business in Birmingham. Sumner set his own criteria for the new brand:
The Typhoo brand is well-known in Britain for its long running Television Commercial campaign jingles, one of the most popular being "There's only one 'T' in Typhoo." TODAY The brand is now owned by British company Premier Foods , and is manufactured at Moreton on the Wirral . Previously it was manufactured in Edinburgh , Scotland . In October 2005 Premier Foods announced that it was selling Typhoo along with their other tea brands to Indian company Apeejay Surrendra Group for £80 million. {Link without Title} The old works still stand, including a large chimney. The site is to be redeveloped into a prestigious canal-side apartment project. Premier Foods claim that 6.4 million cups of Typhoo are drunk each day, in addition to 2 million cups of its fruit and herb teas. This equates to 10,000 tonnes of tea bags each year. EXTERNAL LINK |
