> Tungurahua ( Quechua tunguri=gullet, rahua=burn, spit fire) is an active Stratovolcano in Ecuador . It is situated in the Central Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes , towering above the Amazon Rain Forest . Its most recent eruption occurred in 1944. In August 2003, it ejected a plume of ash and smoke 3 kilometres (2 miles) into the air. It is also known as "''The Black Giant''".
