In Baseball , the Triple Crown refers to: #A batter who (at season's end) leads the league in three major categories -- Home Run s, Runs Batted In , and Batting Average . #A pitcher who (at season's end) leads the league in three major categories -- Earned Run Average , Win s, and Strikeout s. The Major League Triple Crown is to be distinguished from the American League and National League Triple Crowns. To win the Major League Triple Crown, the player must lead the entire majors in each of the three categories and not just his individual league, making the Major League Triple Crown significantly more difficult to attain. The last player to win the Major League Triple Crown in hitting was Mickey Mantle in 1956 , while the last person to win the Major League Triple Crown in pitching was Dwight Gooden in 1985 .
