In 1978, Wickham won both the 400m and 800m freestyle at the 1978 Commonwealth Games . The same year, she set world records in both events. Both world records stood until 1987, long after her retirement. In 1980, Australia elected not to officially Boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics . However Wickham, along with a number of other Australian athletes, elected to boycott the games personally. She again won gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle at the 1982 Commonwealth Games . She retired soon after. The athlete's oath at the Opening Ceremony of the 1982 Commonweath Games was also taken by Tracey Wickham. In 1978, she became the youngest Australian to be awarded an MBE . |
