Tougaloo College

Tougaloo College is a Co-educational and predominantly African-American Institute of Higher Learning founded in 1869 . Tougaloo, along with Jackson State University are the two large historically black universities in the Jackson, Mississippi area. Beverly Hogan is the current president of this college.

In 1869 , the American Missionary Association of New York purchased a former plantation of five hundred acres of land near Jackson, Mississippi to form Tougaloo Southern Christian College. In 1871 , the Legislature of the State of Mississippi granted the institution a charter under the name of "Tougaloo University." Tougaloo remained predomiantly ateacher training school until 1892 when the College ceased to receive aid from the state. Courses for college credit were first offered in 1897 , and the first Bachelor of Arts degree was granted in 1901 . In 1916 , the name of the institution was changed to Tougaloo College.

Six years after Tougaloo's founding, the Home Missionary Society of the Disciples of Christ obtained a charter from the Mississippi State Legislature to establish a school at Edwards, Mississippi, to be known as Southern Christian Institute. The two schools had similar ideals and goals, and therefore, were able to merge in 1954 . The new college combined the resources of the two supporting bodies and renewed its dedication to educational advancement and the improvement of race relations in Mississippi. During these years, Tougaloo had a great influx of students, and several African American graduates became some of the most prominent citizens of their community as a result of graduating from Tougaloo.

The faculty and the administration challenged students to be prepared to take advantage of opportunities available in the changing South and throughout the nation. The alumni bodies of the two institutions united to become the National Alumni Association of Tougaloo Southern Christian College. In 1962 , by vote of the Board of Trustees, and with the agreement of the supporting bodies, the name was changed again to Tougaloo College. Today, Tougaloo graduates over three fourths of Mississippi's African-American doctors and lawyers. Beverly Hogan became the college's first female president in 2002 .
