Torrey Pines High School is a High School in the Carmel Valley neighborhood of San Diego , California , that ranks 82nd in the nation on Newsweek's List of Best High Schools. The school is named after the rare Torrey Pine tree that grows in the area. The school is in the San Dieguito Union High School District . Before the school opened, the students attended San Dieguito Academy (then known as San Dieguito High School). Torrey Pines High School is known throughout San Diego County for its strong academic background. Its students have been Sweepstakes winners in the Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair and its Science Olympiad team consistently places first in the region and second in the state of California. Its Academic Team has represented the state of California in the Panasonic Academic Challenge for two years running. The school newspaper, ''The Falconer'', has placed well at national conventions, most recently 8th at the 2005 JEA/HSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Chicago and placing first in the 2004 JEA/HSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention. The school Literary Magazine, entitled FirstFlight, placed first in Best of Show for High School Literary Magazine. The school's black box theater and its actors are also widely acknowledged for achievements in the theatrical fields. They have received awards for best play in their region from the California Educational Theater Association for their presentation of Metamorphosis in 2003 and Inherit the Wind in 2005. The TP Players have also been awarded the chance to perform at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in the summer of 2006. On the athletic plane, the school boasts strong tennis, golf, basketball, and football teams. San Diego CIF girl's tennis singles and doubles titles were taken by Torrey Pines athletes. The school Mascot is (Freddy) the falcon. The majority of students come from highly affluent families. People from Rancho Santa Fe , the second wealthiest zip code in the United States, attend the school. Rick Schmitt is the current Principal of the school.
