The Shire of Toodyay is a Local Government Area of Western Australia .

The original town of Toodyay was situated 5 km further down the Avon. The site was subject to flooding, so in 1860 a new townsite was established under the name ''Newcastle''. In May 1910 the name of the new town was changed to ''Toodyay'', and the original town of Toodyay became ''West Toodyay''. The current name 'Toodyay' is believed to come from an Indigenous Australian word meaning 'Place of Plenty'.
