GEOGRAPHY Tompkinsville is located at 36°41'58" North, 85°41'31" West (36.699508, -85.692005). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 9.9 Km&2 (3.8 Mi&2 ). 9.5 km&2 (3.7 mi&2) of it is land and 0.5 km&2 (0.2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 4.69% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 2,660 people, 1,169 households, and 702 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 280.6/km&2 (727.4/mi&2). There were 1,321 housing units at an average density of 139.4/km&2 (361.2/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 89.47% White , 8.95% African American , 0.04% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.08% Pacific Islander , 0.53% from Other Races , and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,169 households out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were Married Couples living together, 16.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% were non-families. 37.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.84. In the city the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 76.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $18,267, and the median income for a family was $23,361. Males had a median income of $21,587 versus $16,541 for females.
