In regard to the early, formative, days of cricket in Britain Timothy J McCann wrote up and edited a remarkable book about two Westminster School boys who were considerable in their later years. One was the 2nd Duke of Richmond, Charles Lennox, who is best known to history as 'The Duke who was Cricket' while his close friend at school at Westminster was Thomas Pelham-Holles the Duke of Newcastle. The correspondence of Richmond and Newcastle has innumeravle mentions of cricket matches, some of which were arranged by the two dukes for their own electoral and general political advantage. |
