"Time after Time" was the second commercially released solo single by singer , Chile , Japan and the United States (where it was certified gold); #2 in Israel ; #3 in New Zealand and the United Kingdom ; #4 in Australia ; #5 in Austria , the Netherlands and Italy ; #6 in Germany ; #7 in Switzerland ; and #9 in France . Though " Girls Just Wanna Have Fun " song is considered to be Lauper's signature song, she did not write it. However, she did co-write "Time After Time", which is widely considered a classic ballad of the 1980s , and is still played frequently on Adult Contemporary radio. An accompanying Music Video aired heavily on MTV and featured Lauper in a running-away-from-home scenario as she parted ways with a lover and took off in a Train . The single has been released in over 29 variations across the world, the most common being a two track 7" vinyl single (with varying covers) and a four track 12" vinyl single (also with varying covers). The song has been covered, either in live performance or on a recording, by at least 97 different artists including Miles Davis , Everything But The Girl , Eddie Money , The Hooters , Matchbox Twenty , INOJ , Blaque , Eva Cassidy , Willie Nelson , Uncle Kracker , The Beloved , Joey McIntyre , Nichole Nordeman , Patti LuPone and Sugar Ray . It was also played in the 'dance scene' of '' Romy And Michele's High School Reunion '' and '' Napoleon Dynamite '' ( Jared Hess , 2004).
