He began his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1984 before playing for Southampton , Swindon Town , Blackburn Rovers , Leicester City , Stockport County , and Coventry City . He made over 520 league appearances.

He was transferred from Southampton to Blackburn in 1993 for a fee of £ 2.4 million, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in England at the time. He went on to win a Premiership winner's medal with Blackburn in 1995 .

Flowers also won 11 Caps with England between 1994 and 1998. He was in the squads for both in England and the in France . He retired following the 2002-03 season, and he currently works as the goalkeeping coach for Manchester City .
