The three-finger salute ( Salute with the thumb, index, and middle fingers open. The salute is a relatively recent invention , supposedly based on Orthodox way of Crossing , with the three fingers instead of entire hand. (which is is associated with the Christian Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit). But, through decades of ethnic strife, the gesture took on a nationalist meaning. It is also associated with the "Four S's", from the nationalist slogan ''Samo Sloga Srbina Spasava'' - "Only Unity Saves the Serbs."

During the Bosnian War , this gesture contrasted with the Bosniak raised index finger symbolizing Islamic Monotheism , and the Croat V-sign .
