The Woodlands School is a public high school in the Peel Board , located in Mississauga, Ontario . The Woodlands Senior Public School started in 1969 with 400 students in grades 7 and 8. The school was located at Springfield Public School while the first phase of the present building was under construction. In September 1970, students and staff moved to the present building and it became a combined elementary and secondary school with its first grade 9 students. Today, The Woodlands School accommodates 1700 students. In addition to a wealth of resources and talent, The Woodlands has a wealth of "clients". Woodlands students speak more than sixty first languages and we have a "representative" from just about every country on the planet! The student community is a fascinating and harmonious mix of cultures, religions and languages. Given this diversity, we have a solid ESL (English as a Second Language) program to assist newer Canadians. We also have a Peer Assisted Learning program and helpers from ESL Peer Tutors. Many of these organizations' volunteers are former ESL students who have now mastered English. The Woodlands is also a Regional Enhanced Learning Centre for the secondary gifted program. Strong student performances, as individuals, and as teams, consistently place The Woodlands School among the top academic schools in the Peel District School Board and Ontario. This year they welcome students from the Applewood Acres satellite program to The Woodlands School. This is the seventh Applewood Acres satellite class to join a secondary school in our system. As of September 2005, the school has approximately 1700 students of which 250 are bus riders. Its Superintendent is Hal Brooksie. Its principal is Jeanne Gray. HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS Grade 9 to 12 Secondary Students are on the semester system and have individual timetables dependent on their course selections. The school year for secondary students has two semesters. Semester one runs from September to mid-January and is followed by examinations. Semester two is scheduled from February to mid-June and is followed by examinations. Each semester is divided into two terms for purposes of mid-term reporting and the delivery of half-credit programs. Progress reports for students are issued after the first month of the semester. Mid-term reports are issued to every student at the end of the first term of each semester. At the outset of each semester, each student receives, in written form, the method used to calculate the term portion of the mark in their subjects. ELEMENTARY STUDENTS Elementary students are on a full-year schedule of three terms with most subjects taught in rotation on a four-day cycle. Report cards for each term are sent home with students in December, March and June. Elementary classes continue throughout the secondary exam periods. The Woodlands School is Mississauga's centre for the high school portion of its Enhanced Learning Program. This is the name of Peel Region's gifted program, which has a 90th Percentile cutoff. Enhanced students usually do not live within walking distance and thus are privileged to ride on the school's bus system. Unlike most public high schools in Ontario, Enhanced level courses are offered along with Ontario's standard Applied and Advanced level courses. Enhanced students enroll almost exclusively in the Enhanced level courses. Owing to this, social life in the student population is generally split between the local students and the students in the Enhanced program who come from across Mississauga. ATHLETICS The school athletics clubs are known as the Woodlands Rams. The student teams usually perform very well in national and international academic competitions such as the Euclid Math Contest and the ACM Programming Competition (High School). The Woodlands is also noted for its strong Lacrosse and Cricket teams. These teams have won several competitions at the national and provincial levels in the past few years. ABSTRACT It was designed to be an open-concept school. However, after a few years this concept didn't work well and the school was reorganized along traditional lines. Now none of the classrooms has windows. Exceptions include the portables, a few elementary classrooms, and two art rooms (one of which has its windows boarded up for dark room purposes).
