''The Mercury'' is a daily Newspaper , published in Hobart , Tasmania , Australia . The Sunday edition of the paper is called '''''The Sunday Tasmanian'''''. The newspaper was started in 1854 by John Davies , then published twice weekly and known as the ''Hobarton Mercury''. After Davies' death, it was carried on by his sons under the name of Davies Brothers Ltd . In 1988 , it was sold to News Corporation . As of 2005 the paper reports its Monday-Friday circulation as 48,630 with readership of 130,000 and its Saturday circulation as 63,550 with readership of 155,000.
