Information About

The Streets Of San Francisco

The show starred Karl Malden as Detective Lt. Mike Stone and Michael Douglas as Inspector Steve Keller (1972–76), plainclothes SFPD homicide detectives who cruise the streets of San Francisco solving a variety of crimes, usually involving murder. Stone is the street-smart veteran cop and Keller is the college-educated rookie. Much of the success of the show was due to the believable relationship between the two detectives. The show made Douglas, who at the time was known mostly as the son of Kirk Douglas , a star in his own right and brought Malden back into the limelight.

The series started with a TV-movie (based on the detective novel "Poor, Poor Ophelia" by Carolyn Weston ) of the same name in 1972. Michael Douglas quit the show in 1976 to produce the film '' One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest ''. His character's absence was explained by having him take a teaching position at a local college.

Richard Hatch , playing rookie Inspector Dan Robbins, replaced Douglas during the show's final season.

An NBC TV movie "Back to the Streets of San Francisco" was released in early 1992 . Karl Malden returns as Mike Stone but Keller's absence is explained by having the character be a murder victim. Stone heads up an investigation, while at the same time investigating a different brutal murder. He also attempts to decide which of two inspectors should be recommended for the position of Lieutenant. Actors Debrah Farentino and Conor O’Farrell played the two inspectors.

TRIVIA

Martin Sheen played Dean Knox in episode #2.2 "Betrayed" ( September 20 , 1973 ) and Arnold Schwarzenegger played Josef Schmidt in episode #5.19 ( May 5 , 1977 ). Mark Hamill made an early appearance as Andrew "Andy" Turner in episode # 4.1 "Poisoned Snow" ( September 1975 ). Other guest stars included Leslie Nielsen , James Woods , and Meg Foster .

An occasional character in the series, "Sekulovich," played by Art Metrano , was usually a leg-man for Stone and asked to do errands or get coffee. The inside joke was that Sekulovich was Karl Malden's real Surname .
