The book chronicles the life of Daisy Goodwill Flett, a seemingly ordinary woman whose fundamental humanity is depicted lovingly by Shields, a writer who was widely regarded for her ability to make even the most ordinary of characters compelling. The book's title may have been inspired by Pat Lowther 's poetry collection ''A Stone Diary''. Lowther's tragic murder in 1975 was the inspiration for Shields' earlier novel '' Swann ''. |
