STAGE HISTORY

The play was first staged at the Royal National Theatre in 1980, and subsequently became the focus of an unsuccessful legal challenge by campaigner Mary Whitehouse against the play’s director Michael Bogdanov . The complaint related to the on-stage depiction of sexual violence. The director Samuel West resurrected the play in 2006 at the Crucible Theatre , Sheffield .
