"The One I Love" is a song by R.E.M. . It was released on the band's fifth full-length studio album, '' Document '', and also as a 7" Vinyl Single in 1987 . The single hit #9 in the US Billboard Hot 100 and later reached #16 in the UK Singles Chart on its UK release ( 1991 ).

The song is often misinterpreted as a love song. The line "''A simple prop to occupy my time''" proves otherwise. The song is actually about the satisfaction of the ending of a failed relationship. It was the first R.E.M. song to have the word "Love" in the title, five albums into their career. This is one of the first R.E.M songs to feature a guitar solo prominently.

The song only contains three verses, which are all near identical, with small variations each repeat of the verse. (For example "A simple prop to occupy my time", "Another prop has occupied my time")

The Director Of Photography for the music video was Food Network Celebrity Chef Alton Brown during his original career in Cinematography and film production. The Director was artist Robert Longo .

The song was later covered by the 90's band ", which is a live recording of their Woodstock '99 performance.
