The Omega Directive (voyager Episode)

PLOT SUMMARY

Traveling through space Voyager is suddenly rocked by a distant explosion. Although ships systems appear un-damaged, all information and control screens are suddenly locked out to be replaced with a picture of an Omega symbol. Captain Janeway arrives on the bridge informing the crew not to worry and ordering the ships computer to Override and transfer all data to her office, but leaves without explaining to her bemused crew what happened. Alone in her office she asks the computer to brief her on the detection of 'OMEGA'.

Because Voyager is separated from Starfleet , the Omega team (a specially trained group which would normally be tasked with handling situations involving Omega) cannot be brought in to deal with the problem. Janeway is thus forced to break the code of silence, and inform her officers of the Omega Directive which traditionally is only revealed to captains and admirals. It states that all Omega Particle s must be destroyed, as they are too dangerous to exist - an uncontrolled Omega explosion can make warp travel impossible in a given region of space, and the consequences of this would naturally be disastrous.

Moving to the coordinates of the explosion they encounter the alien race that created it, on the brink of economic failure, which are making Omega to "give their children a chance at a future." Seven of Nine, a Borg member of the crew, displays an interest in the scientist's methods, hoping to save the omega particles and harness them, because she believes them to be perfection (infinite particles working together in harmony), despite ample Starfleet and Borg evidence of their danger. The Borg are also bound by a similar rule as the humans are, after losing a large quantity of Borg vessels (29 cubes, 600,000 drones) and subspace to Omega explosions while trying to harness the power of the substance. As such, the Borg have not experimented with Omega since then. Seven of Nine states that the Collective would go to great lengths in securing and harnessing stable Omega particles, which would in turn make the Borg an unstoppable force; it's this remark that makes Janeway decide that the aliens' Omega must be destroyed, at all costs.

Eventually all the particles are safely gathered together and detonated a safe distance from the alien planet, tantalizingly stabilizing before Seven of Nine's eyes before they are destroyed.
