Christopher Lee . it was directed by
Gordon Hessler .
Ostensibly part of the
Edgar Allan Poe series of
American International Pictures , the film has nothing to do with Poe apart from the title.
Supposedly mad Sir Edward Markham(
Alister Williamson ) is kept captive in the attic of his house by his brother Julian (
Vincent Price ). When he escapes, he conspires with an unscrupilous doctor (
Christopher Lee ) after emerging from the "oblong box' of the title. Wearing a red hood to hide his disfigured face, Sir Edward commits murders and romances a chambermaid. He learns a terrible secret concerning his time in Africa that will have an impact on the entire Markham family.
- ''Alister Williamson's voice was dubbed.
- '' Michael Reeves was set to direct this film but died before it was filmed.
- ''Despite the fact that neither his voice is heard nor his face is visible, Williamson still has the largest amount of screen time of any actor in the film.
