The Gap is a leafy and hilly suburb on the north west side of Brisbane , Queensland , Australia , which is on the boundary of the urbanised area of Brisbane. The Gap is situated between the Brisbane suburb of Ashgrove and the bushland area of Mount Nebo . The Gap derives its name from its geographical location of being on foothills in a Valley (i.e. ''the gap between hills''). The suburb, The Gap, is located between Mount Coot-tha and Enoggera Hill (both Mount Coot-tha and Enoggera Hill form part of the Taylor Range ). First settled in 1860 , The Gap was originally a Farming area. The district was later subdivided into blocks of land for housing estates, with one of the remnants of The Gap's former rural identity being The Gap Pony Club. The Gap has many fantastic resources including many sporting clubs (Soccer, Squash, Tennis etc) and lush green parks. Also located in The Gap is Brisbane Forest Park , a wildlife education centre and sanctuary. The Gap has the Postcode 4061. The suburb has a large-size shopping centre (which extends from Walton Bridge Reserve to The Gap State High School and Payne Road State School), with a large-size Coles Supermarket , cafes, banks, pet shop, clothing shops and newsagencies, sports shop, hardware shop, jewellery shop, book shop, photo and camera shop, hairdressers and barber, etc. as well as medical centres, dental surgery, opticians, veterinary surgery, pharmacies, hardware store, video rental store and real estate agencies, etc. Schools in The Gap include:
There are also Churches of many faiths, as well as a local Police Station in the suburb, and the Ashgrove Fire Brigade , which is at West Ashgrove , is also in close proximity to The Gap. Ashgrove Golf Course , which is mainly on the foothills of Enoggera Hill, is actually located in The Gap, even though its name would suggest that it is in Ashgrove . The main arterial road through The Gap is ''Waterworks Road'', which heads east through the suburbs St Johns Wood , Ashgrove and Red Hill and then, as ''Musgrave Road'', it continues to Brisbane city. Waterworks Road was widened, from a two lane highway to a four lane highway, along the 8km stretch of road between The Gap and Red Hill between July 1999 and December 2003. Total cost was $50 Million . ADDITIONAL PHOTOS OF THE GAP, BRISBANE   |
