Information About

The Folly Tower

The Folly Tower is a by local worthy, John Hanbury , the original tower had neither roof nor floor. It was rebuilt and restored in the 19th century. In 1935 nearly 20,000 people gathered at the '''Folly Tower''' to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V with a Bonfire . In 1940 , the British army blew up the Tower to prevent it helping the Luftwaffe locate and bomb nearby ROF Glascoed .

For many years after 1945 rebuilding the Tower was a low priority for the local council. Eventually, in the 1980s a group called Campaign for the Reconstruction of the Folly Tower achieved sufficient backing that the £60,000 required was raised to rebuild the Folly Tower. It was officially reopened by HRH the Prince Of Wales in 1994 .

From the top it is said that, on clear days, seven Welsh and English counties can be seen. Even on unclear days, the recovery to verdant wood and grass-land from former, local industrial despoilation is striking.
