In 2004, this installment of the race won the series its second consecutive Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Reality-Competition Program."

Filming began on January 18 , 2003 and finished on February 14 , 2003.

RESULTS

The following teams participated in the Race, listed in reverse finishing order:

  • Red means the team was eliminated.

  • Blue means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race.

  • Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue.

  • --- Reichen & Chip had arrived 2nd, but they chose to drive to the pit stop and therefore received a 35 minute penalty.

  • ° Although David and Jeff were in third place at the end of the episode, they did not finish the race.

TRIVIA

General

  • At the time the show was filmed and broadcast, same-sex marriage was not legal anywhere in the United States . Reichen and Chip were never legally married under U.S. Law ; CBS nevertheless chose to honor their description of themselves.

  • A record seven Fast Forwards were handed out (including the first five legs of the race), only one of which was sought by more than one team.

  • At six (aired), Tian holds the record for most Roadblock tasks performed by a contestant whose teammate did not perform any.

  • Although they are the third team overall not to finish a leg in first place immediately following the Fast Forward, the NFL Wives (Monica and Sheree) are the first team to use it and finish neither first nor last. They finished in fourth.

Pre-Race

  • Redundant names were a theme in this edition of the Race. There were 3 Steves, 2 Jons, a David and a Dave, and a Sheree and a Jaree.

  • The finale, originally scheduled to be aired as one two-hour episode, aired over two weeks because of Power Outages affecting the large areas in Eastern United States .

In-Race

  • Reichen and Chip were not planning on taking the Fast Forward task in the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary in Leg 9. However, since they had unintentionally traveled in that direction, they decided to complete the route. Jon and Kelly were trying for the green pass (color of the Fast Forward indicator) but had to go back to complete the Detour and the Roadblock, barely beating out Chuck and Millie for a final four berth.

  • On Leg 13, David and Jeff made a mistake in flying into Sydney to get flights to Hawaii . There were none until the next day, which put them so far behind that they did not reach the Finish Line.

  • They are 36 hours pitstop in Leg 3 ( Gmunden , Austria ); '''Leg 5''' ( Muiden , Netherlands ); and '''Leg 7''' ( Alleppey , India ).

Post-Race

  • After the race, Reichen & Chip "divorced" but still remained friends. After winning Reichen started a career in modelling, selling his own semi-nude annual calendar. Reichen also hosts a new show "The Reichen Show" on Q Television.
