NAME

The name is a Portmanteau of " Texas " and "New Mexico". Texico is located on the Texas-New Mexico border. The town of Farwell, Texas borders Texico on the other side.


GEOGRAPHY


Texico is located at 34°23'28" North, 103°2'54" West (34.391244, -103.048239).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 2.1 Km&2 (0.8 Mi&2 ). 2.1 km&2 (0.8 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 1,065 people, 381 households, and 278 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 501.5/km&2 (1,299.0/mi&2). There were 414 housing units at an average density of 194.9/km&2 (504.9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 59.15% White , 4.60% African American , 1.22% Native American , 0.09% Asian , 0.09% Pacific Islander , 31.46% from Other Races , and 3.38% from two or more races. 47.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 381 households out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were Married Couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.34.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,519, and the median income for a family was $29,554. Males had a median income of $23,672 versus $15,250 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $10,584. 20.9% of the population and 17.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 18.8% of those under the age of 18 and 19.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
