Information About

Team Cipher

Cipher is a fictional team of villains, who serve as the antagonists in the ''. They seek to turn Pokémon into Shadow Pokémon, by "closing the door to their hearts" and turning them nearly irreconcilably evil.

HISTORY

Cipher haunts the region of Orre , their ultimate goal is to transform all Pokémon into evil Shadow Pokémon , by sealing the doors to their hearts. In Pokémon Colosseum, Cipher supplied Snag Machine s to Team Snagem , who stole Pokémon from trainers and gave them to Cipher for use in experiments. Cipher’s plans were thwarted by Wes and Rui, the boss Evice failing to make his escape thanks to Ho‑oh . Cipher went into remission for five years, ending their relationship with Team Snagem. But over the five years, they gained a new boss, new admins and a plot so evil that Evice would weep in shame. Sometime during those five years, Cipher successfully managed to capture a Lugia , sealing the door to its heart permanently (or so they believed) and even transforming it into a nightmarish beast. They named it ''XD001'', and used it to hijack the luxury cruise ship, the S.S. ''Libra'', right out of the ocean and carried it away. Cipher members captured all the Pokémon on board (except one Bonsly ) and managed to turn them into Shadow Pokémon. Unfortunately, Dark Lugia accidentally lost its control and dropped the S.S. ''Libra'' in the middle of the Orre Desert . Cipher was much more formidable, now armed with 83 Shadow Pokémon, including Articuno , Zapdos and Moltres . Cipher built their new headquarters on the isolated Citadark Isle, their new leader was Grand Master Greevil (a.k.a. Mr. Verich). However, their plans were destroyed once again, this time by a boy named Michael. Greevil lost shadow Lugia and all his Shadow Pokémon to Michael and collapsed from exhaustion. Greevil’s son Ardos wanted him to destroy the island with Michael and all their loyal staff still on it, but Eldes managed to convince his father to give up the grand master title and surrender to the police. Ardos fled and is now running from a nationwide man-hunt. Whether or not Cipher will return in the future is unknown.

CIPHER IN POKéMON COLOSSEUM

In Colosseum, Cipher worked with Team Snagem, planning to conquer Orre and later the world with an army of unstoppable Shadow Pokémon. With the boss, Evice, disguised as the mayor of Phenac City, it was no surprise that so many ruffians were coming into Phenac. Wes, an ex-member of Team Snagem, and a girl named Rui stopped the plans of Cipher. After battling against the admins: Miror B., Dakim, Venus and Ein, Team Snagem leader Gonzap and chief executive Nascour , Wes went up against Evice and his Shadow Tyranitar . Evice tried to flee in a Helicopter but a Sacred Fire attack from Ho‑oh stopped him. Evice and Nascour were arrested and taken to prison.

Miror B. (Admin/Wanderer)- Owns a Shadow Sudowoodo , Shadow Voltorb , Shadow Nosepass , Shadow Dragonite . Miror B. is a memorable member of Cipher, not only for his love for music and his very own theme tune, but for his massive Pokéball -shaped Afro . Miror B. dresses like a Hippy in gold clothes, and later black clothes and adores music and dancing. He has a team of Ludicolo which mainly use Rain Dance in battle. Miror B. has a hideout in Pyrite Town with two minions, Folly and Trudly. In Pokémon XD, Miror B. presumably did not know about the reformation of Cipher (or just didn’t care), and became a wanderer, wanting to start his own team of criminals. He owns a Shadow Voltorb to begin with and later obtains a Shadow Nosepass and Shadow Dragonite . Every time the player in XD fails to obtain a Shadow Pokémon, it will somehow wind up in the hands of Miror B.

Dakim (Admin)- Owns a Shadow Entei . Dakim is one hot-headed man. Large and bulky, Dakim is obviously strong and gets easily grumpy. He uses strong Pokémon and generally uses Protect and Earthquake in battle. Dakim’s role is not entirely known in Cipher, except being an admin, but be he might possibly a fitness trainer to new members of Cipher. Dakim is sent to obtain the Time Flute from Vander at Mt. Battle, so Cipher could capture Celebi and possibly corrupt it. Wes defeated Dakim and captured his Entei. Dakim battled Wes again in the Realgam Tower and Under Colosseum. It is unknown what happened to him during the five years Cipher were out of commission, but might have been arrested.

Venus (Admin)- Owns a Shadow Suicune . Venus is the only female admin of Cipher. A natural beauty, Venus set up base camp in the Under, becoming an idol to the inhabitants, especially to an old man in the Under’s hotel and a guy on top of the Pokémon Mart. Venus is quite the manipulator, which probably scored her the job of admin in Cipher. Venus uses the Under’s closed subway to travel to the Shadow Lab, vice versa for Ein. Venus uses status effect moves in battles and wipes her enemies out with good attacks. But if losing is the only option, expect a flurry of tears and wailing from Venus.

Ein (Admin/Chief Scientist)- Owns a Shadow Raikou . Ein is the chief Scientist and researcher of Cipher, and leads the challenge to corrupt Pokémon, and it probably was quite a challenge for him. Ein is a very intelligent man, but has difficulty communicating with others around him, but he appears to have a good relationship with Nascour and Venus. Ein meets Wes when the young hero infiltrates the Shadow Pokemon Lab. Ein battles against Wes, using attacks like Rain Dance, Thunder and Toxic, but loses all the same. Ein uses Electric and Water Pokémon, his leading Pokémon being a Raikou, whose tail has been copied by Ein for a hairstyle.

Nascour (Chief Executive) - Owns a Shadow Metagross . Nascour is one mysterious man, and is the Chief Executive of Cipher. Disguising himself as the leader of Cipher, Nascour mostly stayed in the shadows but had a brief encounter with Wes early in the events of Pokémon Colosseum. He is cold-hearted and unforgiving, and hates losing Pokémon battles. He has glowing red eyes and long green hair which seems to float in midair in a Medusa style. Nascour uses his Pokémon’s most powerful attacks in battle to wipe out his opponents.

Evice (Boss) - Owns a Shadow Tyranitar . Evice, the leader of Cipher in Orre is one terrifying villain. For one, he has glowing red eyes, a sinister form and can defy gravity by floating in the air. Evice is a formidable foe, blowing his enemies into oblivion with unstoppable attacks like Hyper Beam and Crush Claw. Disguising himself as Es Cade, the friendly and ever cheerful Mayor of Phenac, Evice can be given details on the operations of his empire by his underlings undetected. Evice uses very regal Pokémon including Salamence , Machamp , Scizor , Slaking , Slowking and a deadly Shadow Tyranitar . Evice lost to Wes in a battle, and tried to escape in a helicopter. However, it was destroyed by Ho‑Oh. Evice was arrested by the police and jailed with Nascour. According to a scientist in XD, Evice is still behind bars and probably will be for a very long time to come. (It is not known whether any member of Cipher besides Nascour knew Evice was the true leader.)

CIPHER IN POKéMON XD

After five years of being absent, Cipher returned to Orre, having created a totally evil Lugia , a.k.a. ''XD001''. Cipher and Dark Lugia hijacked the luxury cruiser, S.S. ''Libra'' and captured all the Pokémon on board, sending them all off to the Cipher Key Lab to be turned into Shadow Pokémon. Dark Lugia dropped the ''Libra'' in the deserts of Orre and headed off with the main members of Cipher to Citadark Isle, where the new base was located. Cipher kidnapped Professor Krane to try and get him to help them in their diabolical plan for world domination, but Krane would have no part in it. The hero, Michael, saved Krane and went on a adventure across Orre to stop Cipher’s plan, battling against members of Cipher, saving the ONBS and Phenac City and even getting help from Team Snagem in the process. Michael reached Citadark Isle and battled his way to the leader, Greevil. Greevil lost to Michael, losing Dark Lugia in the process. Greevil then surrendered to the law after some loving words from his son Eldes.

The Hexagon Brothers (Peon Team) - This group of six peons are all brothers, each one owning a single Shadow Pokémon. They seem to be more interested in sounding off in a formation than battling, though their stupidity often interferes with the count. Each of the Hexagon Brothers has a different color uniform, which clues you in on what type of Pokémon they use and what shadow Pokémon they own:

Resix (red) - Fire - Houndour

Blusix (blue) - Water - Spheal

Greesix (green)- Grass - Seedot

Yellosix (yellow) - Electric - Mareep

Purpsix (purple) - Poison - Gulpin

Browsix (brown) - Various - Baltoy

Lovrina (Admin/Possible Scientist) - Owns a Shadow Delcatty , Farfetch’d and Altaria . Lovrina carries on the tradition from the original run-up of Cipher, being the only female admin. Lovrina is much younger than the other admins, and has very long pink hair in ponytails that go all the way down to her knees. Lovrina has a similar stroppy and somewhat babyish attitude to that of Venus. Lovrina tries to persuade Professor Krane to help Cipher in the Shadow Pokémon Plan, but Krane refuses. Michael rescues Krane and has to battle Lovrina in order to escape the Shadow Cipher Lab. Lovrina returns to Citadark Island and battles Michael again on the bottom floor of the base. After being defeated again, Lovrina reveals to Michael she has made some final adjustments to XD001, so that it is impossible to purify, before she escapes. She is later battled again in the Orre Colosseum. Fans speculate she might possibly be a scientist of some sort, but this is not entirely known. (She is the older sister of another Cipher member named Naps, who owns the first Shadow Pokémon you acquire.)

Gorigan (Admin/CEO at Cipher Key Lab) - Owns a Shadow Hypno , Primeape , Poliwrath and Mr. Mime . Gorigan is the second admin of Cipher. Bald, muscular and acts somewhat like a Gorilla , Gorigan is like a second incarnation of Dakim and even uses the “Protect-Earthquake” technique in battle. Gorigan runs the Cipher Key Lab, his office on top. Gorigan is a little comical, and is cowardly, fearing that Master Greevil will kill him if he fails his missions. Gorigan is first introduced scouting the S.S. ''Libra'' for any Pokémon left behind, but makes his exit to the Cipher Key Lab. Michael battles his way to the top of the Key Lab and faces off against Gorgian, defeating him. Gorgian is later seen on Citadark Island, quite happy to see Michael. After losing to him again, Gorigan flees for his life. Gorigan is battled a third time in Orre Colosseum. Gorigan is dressed like some sort of Mechanic . Perhaps he has some sort of engineering skills in the ranks of Cipher.

Snattle (Chief Executive) - Owns a Shadow Lunatone , Solrock and Starmie . Replacing Nascour as Chief Executive is this posh snobby man. Snattle was promised by Greevil that when the Shadow Pokémon Plan was complete, he would make him Governor of Orre. Snattle dreams of a rank that high and gets his goals done. Snattle took over the entire city of Phenac, imprisoning the entire population in the basement of the Pre-Gym. Michael defeats Snattle, causing him to flee (and he’s got a very funny run). Snattle later battles Michael when the brave trainer reaches the top of Citadark Isle. Snattle claims Michael humiliated him in their previous encounter. Michael humiliates him again with a crushing defeat. Snattle makes a run for it and is battled again in the Orre Colosseum.

Ardos (Admin/Greevil’s Bodyguard) - Owns a Shadow Electabuzz , Snorlax and Swellow . Ardos is Greevil’s bodyguard and son. He had blue hair, wears blue clothes and has a sinister smirk on his face. Ardos saved Michael and his sister Jovi from being attacked by an angry Thug Zook using his Alakazam . After being defeated, Ardos appears in Greevil’s arena to see his father has fallen. Ardos tries to convince Greevil to blow up the island with Michael on it, but that would mean killing all of Cipher’s loyal staff as well. Ardos’s brother, Eldes, tries and succeeds in convincing his father to surrender to the police. Ardos, digusted by his father’s decision, flees and is now on the run from a nationwide man-hunt. But he battles Michael again in the Orre Colosseum.

Eldes (Admin/Greevil’s Bodyguard) - Owns a Shadow Manectric , Salamence , Marowak and Lapras . Eldes is Greevil’s bodyguard and most trusted admin, as well as being his son. Eldes Eldes later had to battle Michael and was defeated. After Greevil was beaten, Eldes approached him, and asked to give up being Grand Master of Cipher and give in to the police. He succeeded in winning over his father and thanked Michael for stopping his father from going insane. Later Eldes and Michael face off again in the Orre Colosseum as rivals.

Greevil (Grand Master) - Owns XD001 (Shadow Lugia ), and a Shadow Articuno , Zapdos , Moltres , Rhydon , Tauros and Exeggutor . Grand Master Greevil is the true leader of Cipher. A very rich man, Greevil funds Cipher’s needs. Disguising himself as the aristocrat Mr. Verich, Greevil gives free meals to sailors at the Krabby Club in Gateon Port. Greevil revealed his true identity to Michael when Gorigan was defeated the first time round. He challenged Michael to reach Citadark Island. Michael reaches Citadark and battles his way to Greevil. Greevil introduces Shadow Lugia to Michael and watches in utter shock as Michael defeats or captures it. He then unleashes a team of six Shadow Pokémon upon Michael, who defeats or captures them all. Greevil collapses and his two sons appear, Ardos wanting his father to destroy the island, while Eldes wants him to surrender to the law. Greevil listens to Eldes and is arrested and put in jail.

CIPHER PEONS

Cipher Peon]]
Cipher Peons are the lower ranked troops in Cipher’s forces. In ''Pokémon Colosseum'', male peons wore a blue uniform and orange bandana around their neck, while females wore a purple uniform and had long hair. In ''Pokémon XD'', all peons wore a white uniform and red bandana around their neck. In both games, they wear helmets with visors that cover the top halves of their faces.

''Pokémon XD'' also introduced two new types of peons. The first type are usually found with a Cipher Admin. Their uniform is the same as a normal male peon, but the helmet is pointier, and the bandana is yellow. The second type are more bulky and are sometimes refered to as Cipher CMDR . Their Pokémon are usually stronger than normal peons.

Unlike normal trainers, many Cipher peons cling to the ceiling and drop down when the player approaches, catching them by surprise. On rare occasions, they are disguised as ordinary citizens. They also tend to leave their posts when beaten.

CIPHER’S EMPIRE

Cipher has had several locations in Orre that they have used for their bases and hideouts. Cipher has many members, some of which are not even peons but just members of the public. Places they have used include:
;Phenac City: Evice, disguised as Es Cade, ran the city and the citizens saw mysterious people venture into the mayor’s office, including Nascour and Miror B. In Pokémon XD, Phenac City is overrun by Snattle and his peons, who imprison the entire community and their Pokémon in the basement of the Pre Gym. The player must defeat Snattle in order to free Phenac.

;Pyrite Town: This desert town was used by Miror B. as a hideout, giving Shadow Pokémon to trainers who won in the Colosseum. The player must venture into Miror B.’s hideout and into Pyrite Cave and defeat him. In XD, Cipher invades the ONBS to get back a data rom from Bitt and Nett. The player must battle his way to the top of the building and defeat the commander in Nett’s office.

;The Under: In Colosseum, an underground city controlled by Cipher Admin Venus. Player must defeat her to free this dark city of her evil reign.

;Realgam Tower: The original base of Cipher. Here the player had to fight Miror B., Dakim, Venus, Ein, Nascour and Evice in order to complete the game. After Evice was defeated he would try to escape in a helicopter, but Ho‑Oh would destroy it.

;Agate Village: Cipher attacked Agate to try and destroy the shrine to Celebi and capture it as well. The player must defeat the peons in order to save Celebi.

;Mt. Battle: In Colosseum, Dakim and some peons invaded Mt. Battle to obtain the Time Flute from Vander. Dakim punches Vander after he refuses to give him the flute. The player must defeat Dakim in order to free Mt. Battle.

;Cipher Lab: The original laboratory where the Shadow Pokémon were created. It was run by Ein, who the player had to defeat in Pokémon Colosseum. In XD, Lovrina takes over the lab and holds Professor Krane hostage.

;The Cipher Key Lair: This pyramid-like base in owned by Gorigan and where the Shadow Pokémon are developed in XD. The player has to battle his way up to the top of the base where he must turn off the lair’s power and then battle Gorigan.

;Citadark Isle: Cipher’s new base. Its jagged rocks and rough waters make it nearly impossible to reach, but this is created by a mechanism in the base. The player must battle Lovrina, Snattle, Gorigan, Ardos, Eldes and finally Master Greevil in order to complete the game.
