Tambaram




Tambaram is a suburb of Chennai situated 27 km south of the city in Tamil Nadu , India . This is an urban node. It has a bustling market which caters to the population of southern Chennai. Tambaram is a hub to all major destinations from Chennai to south Tamil Nadu as it lies on the busy ChennaiTrichy National Highway . The highway and the Railway line from Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari divide the town into East Tambaram and West Tambaram. The Chennai Suburban Railway network operates a suburban railway line from Chennai Beach to Tambaram.

Tambaram has a military Airforce station and houses one of the Flying (Instructors) Training School of the Indian Air Force . Some of the prominent organisations found in Tambaram are the Sivananda Orphanage , the MCC ( Madras Christian College ) and a number of engineering colleges. The Arignar Anna Zoological Park , located in Vandalur near Tambaram houses some rare species of wild flora and fauna and is famous throughout India.

Tambaram is considered to be a satellite town as it caters to the needs of hundreds of villages and suburbs like Padappai,Seliyur,Agaram and Madipakkam. Tambaram is geographically divided into West, East and Tambaram Sanatorium . East Tambaram is well known for its education. As there are lots of educational institutions present there. Tambaram in general is considered as a haven for Engineering Graduates because of the many colleges located nearby. Some of the notable Engineering colleges in Tambaram include Bharath Deemed University , Dhanalakshmi College Of Engineering and Sri Sai Ram Engg College .The notable schools in the Tambaram include Sri Sankara Vidyalaya,Zion Matriculation School and St Mary's School.

One of Tamil Nadu's Special Economic Zones - the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ)is located in Tambaram. The MEPZ houses varied industries such as Call Centers and garment production factories.

Tambaram Sanatorium has a hospital for Tuberculosis patients. Although rudimentary in facilities and care, the government funded hospital is a last resort for many of the cities dying poor. Recently, an Ayurvedic hospital was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Of India , Dr. Manmohan Singh.


THE MUNICIPALITY

Prior to 1964, Tambaram was a small Panchayat . In 1964 it was constituted as Grade III Municipality comprising the Village Panchayats of Pulikoradu, Irumbliyur, Selaiyur. Due to rapid development and growth of the town commercially and residentially, the Municipality is now classified as a 'Selection Grade Municipality'. The population as per 2001 census is 1,33,667 besides a floating population of more than 1 Lakh per day. The extent of the municipality is 20.72 sq.km.

The most famous road in West Tambaram is the Shanmugam Road which is one of the busiest roads in the city. It is comparable to the Ranganathan Street in West Mambalam. The northern part of the road is the commercial centre while the southern end is called the Medical centre. Tambaram has famous hospitals and diagnostic centres.
