The series takes its title from, but is not based upon, the famous Jules Verne Science Fiction novel, '' From The Earth To The Moon ''. The last episode of the series begins with a look at the making of Georges Méliès ' film based upon the book. Concentrating on the Apollo space program, the series recaps the movie '' The Right Stuff '' in its first episode. So as not to repeat shown events, Hanks, Howard and Grazer, who had previously produced '' Apollo 13 '', for that mission's episode, decided to concentrate on the media reaction to Apollo 13 . Two short shots from the final scenes of the Apollo 13 movie were used in the episode "That's All There Is" - the splashdown of 13 in the movie was shown as the splashdown of Apollo 12, and a view of Apollo 13's recovery ship from the movie was shown as Apollo 12's recovery ship. It won the Emmy Award for best miniseries in 1998. The episodes of the series are: # ''Can We Do This?'' - the decision to go to the moon, covers the Mercury and Gemini programs # ''Apollo 1'' - the fire and subsequent investigation of the Apollo 1 accident # ''We Have Cleared the Tower'' - the recovery and preparation for the flight of Apollo 7 , mainly from the viewpoint of a documentary team covering Apollo 7 # ''1968'' - reminds us of the events of the year 1968 , which culminated in Man's first flight around the Moon during Apollo 8 and the reading of Genesis # ''Spider'' - the development of the Lunar Module and its first manned flights during Apollo 9 and Apollo 10 # '' Mare Tranquilitatis '' - the first Moonlanding of Apollo 11 # ''That's All There Is'' - Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean and his experience on the Apollo 12 mission # ''We Interrupt This Program'' - the reporters' view concerning the 'successful failure' of Apollo 13 # ''For Miles and Miles'' - the return to flight of Alan Shepard and his mission to the moon on Apollo 14 # '' Galileo Was Right'' - the training the Apollo astronauts went through to become geologists on the Moon's surface, specifically the Apollo 15 astronauts # ''The Original Wives Club'' - the story of Apollo from the point of view of the wives who had to endure the dangers of spaceflight at home, framed by the Apollo 16 mission # '' Le Voyage Dans La Lune '' - mixes the story of the last Apollo flight to the Moon on Apollo 17 with the 19th century vision of a trip to the moon by French film maker Georges Méliès CAST TRIVIA A number of actors who appeared in the movies ''Apollo 13'' (Tom Hanks, Chris Ellis, Brett Cullen, Clint Howard, David Andrews) and ''The Right Stuff'' (David Clennon) appear in this series, but as different characters. Some of the NASA flight controllers are played by actors who played similar roles in the film, but because of the large cast of characters this can lead to some confusion in terms of who is who. In the episode about Apollo 11, before Neil Armstrong takes his first step on the moon there is already a footprint where his foot is about to go. Many of the actors became friends with the astronauts they were portraying. For example, Brett Cullen , who played Apollo 9 Command Module pilot David Scott , was invited by the Scott family to their home to watch the series with them, whenever any of his episodes were shown.
