''Swords of Xeen'' is a '' ( 1993 ), and all of the graphics and animations are recycled from there. Allegedly the game started out as an unofficial mod by two fans who hacked the script's data. They were later granted official permission to use the Xeen engine.

The game plays on an entirely new world that is under attack by 'The Source', which claims to be the genius behind Alamar, the main enemy of the fifth game. However, this is a Retcon as Alamar has a history going back to the first game, and The Source is new. Although not officially part of the series, this game was at one point released together with the other two ''Xeen'' titles on a compilation CD entitled ''Might and Magic Trilogy'', the trilogy being games 3, 4 and 5, which had advanced VGA graphics unlike the first two installments.

The gameplay is similar to that of Might and Magic IV and V, but it uses some quirks of the engine to great effect, such as 'morphing' monsters (by using the regular animation of one monster and the attack animation of another). The game is significantly shorter than M&M IV or V - even though the world maps are all of the same size, Swords of Xeen has far fewer towns, castles and dungeons, and lacks the extensive Skyworld from M&M V. The game also contains a bug in the scripting, which allows the player to bypass many encounters by walking sideways.
