Sini Maaria Suvi-Anne Siimes (born 1 June 1963 , Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician. She was the chairman of the Finnish Left Alliance 1998 - 2006 and has been a member of the Finnish parliament ('' Eduskunta '') since 1999 . She is also a member of the Select Committee for foreign affairs and a delegate for Finland in the Nordic Council . Under the two cabinets of Paavo Lipponen ( 1995 - 2003 ), Siimes served as coordinate minister for culture ( 1995 - 1999 ) and finance ( 1999 - 2003 ). From 1995 to 2000 , she was a deputy member of the European Union Committee On Regional Development . In March 2006 she suddenly left the Left Alliance, because she didn't want to support the election of the so-called old "Fighters" to Eduskunta (the "Fighters" are extreme communists whose name ''taistolaiset'' comes from the name of their famous former leader Taisto Sinisalo , whose first name means a battle or a fight). Siimes has a Licentiate degree in Political Science . She has published two books. PUBLICATIONS EXTERNAL LINKS
