The fort was built by Shivaji , initially to counter the Siddi, but was also used as a defence against European interests and was a base for the Maratha navy's ship-building facility. In the mid- 18th Century , the fortress became the base of the notorious Pirate Tulaji Angre (also spelt Tollagee Angria; son of privateer Kanhoji Angre ), but was attacked and destroyed by a force led by William James on 2 April 1755 . |
