The Surinam national football team is the national team of Surinam and is controlled by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond . Although the former Dutch Colony is located in South America , it competes in CONCACAF , together with Guyana . Until the independence of Surinam in 1975 , it competed as the ''Dutch Guiana national football team''. Unfortunately for the team, the best Surinam-born players chose to play for the Netherlands ; that list includes Edgar Davids , Clarence Seedorf , and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink . Dutch-born players like Ruud Gullit , Frank Rijkaard , and Patrick Kluivert could have also chosen to play for Surinam. Recent Heart Of Midlothian and Leicester City striker Marc De Vries was also born in Surinam and therefore could've played for the national side but decided against it. The latest young talent to come out of Surinam are Paulo Vanquilo and Costa Montavistoc who currently ply there trade at Rapid Bucharest of Romania.
