HISTORY In April of 2001, Sakura Bank and Sumitomo Bank merged, forming Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. In December 2002, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) establishes Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. as holding company.
