The discussion quickly took on a life of its own, with "Squiddy" (as he became affectionately known) gradually gaining a large cast of friends, allies, enemies, and other associated characters, most of them parodies of pastiches of existing comic-book characters. The r.a.c "Squiddy" Awards (already several years running by that time) were nicknamed in his honor, and to this day his exploits are still brought up from time to time. Squiddy's visual design was created by cartoonist Ty Templeton , whose illustration of the Self-destructive Cephalopod has often been spotted on official r.a.c T-shirts at Conventions . Suicide Squid's status as a " Fictional Fictional Character " has naturally led to not just the usual two levels of his saga — his "real-world" story, and his story from the point of view of the fictional world in which he lives — but a third, intermediate level, which tracks the publication history of his (actually nonexistent) comic book. OTHER SQUIDS Squid Boy of the Legion Of Net. Heroes , which also grew out of an r.a.c. running joke, originally received his powers from the Suicide Squid. A presumably unrelated "suicide squid" featured in "Back to Reality", an episode of '' Red Dwarf ''. This was a squid which had evolved the ability to induce suicidal despair in others.
