Information About

Stone Soup (comic Strip)

Stone Soup is distributed internationally by Universal Press Syndicate to over 140 newspapers in 6 countries. Five books (the latest being ''Not So Picture Perfect'') have been published collecting the comics. Since Calvin And Hobbes was discontinued for 1995, many newspapers have replaced Calvin and Hobbes with Stone Soup.

FEMALE CHARACTERS

  • Valerie (Val) Stone is a 30-something Widow with two young daughters. She works in an office by requirement rather than by choice. Her home life, however, is the greater source of aggravation, especially when dealing with her daughters. Her idea of cooking usually consists of pre-packaged dinners.

  • Joan Stone is Val's younger sister, rarely seen without her Glasses on. Her lower education level leaves her fewer career choices than Val.

  • Holly Stone is Val's teenage daughter, prone to vanity, entitlement, and getting into fights with her younger sister Alix. She rarely passes up an opportunity to challenge her mother and sees almost everything in terms of herself ("In what universe is tuna noodle surprise a reward?").

  • Alix Stone is Val's pre-teen daughter, a blissfully naive (and pugnacious) Tomboy mystified by her sister's Histrionics , but often easily influenced by her illogical behavior (like wearing Flip-flop s in the November cold). Val considers her the model of calm among the chaos, most of which comes from Holly.

  • "Gramma" Evie Stone is Val and Joan's mother. Instead of being stereotypically warm and fuzzy, she comes across as crotchety and overly stern. She has no patience for modern parenting methods and rarely passes up the chance to express her views on anything. The kids regard her as a mixed blessing, especially since underneath it all she can often be a barrel of fun. In 2006 , she had gone Abroad to Uganda to build houses for an aide organization. She has since returned.

MALE CHARACTERS

  • Wally is the next-door neighbor and Joan's current husband. In an unusual reversal of roles, he can actually cook and thinks Hot Chocolate is a panacea.

  • Max is Joan's preschool son by another man. He has two stock emotions: thrilled with life or utterly miserable.

  • Andy is Wally's teenage nephew, who doesn't think too highly of rules but has no qualms about playing hard rock music at earsplitting levels. He has endeared himself to Holly in countless ways.

  • Phil Jackson is an atypical Motorcycle Police officer who fears the world is becoming too hurried for his liking.

BISCUIT THE PET

The family dog; the apple of Max's eye, but to everyone else, a "yappy little mutt." During the first week of 2006 , Biscuit was clearly defined as a female, gaining weight due to Alix feeding her cookies without Val's knowledge. The family has decided to keep her on a diet. Sadly, she would rather eat cookies than to live for a longer time. Ironically, she enjoys being taken on walks and views household chores as a sign of disinterest in her.
