Stoke-on-Trent railway station is a main-line train station in the United Kingdom . It is located on the Stafford to Manchester branch of the West Coast Main Line and serves the Staffordshire city of Stoke-on-Trent . The station also provides an interchange between various local services running through Cheshire , Staffordshire and Derbyshire .

The very fine Victorian station buildings were opened October 9, 1848 . The other buildings located in Winton Square, including the North Stafford hotel were opened in June, 1849 . All these buildings were to the design of H.A. Hunt of London in an architectural style referred to as ‘robust Jacobean manor-house’. The station buildings are beautifully maintained and managed by Virgin Trains .

The station was built by the , Alsager , Crewe , Congleton , Macclesfield , Stafford , Wolverhampton , Blythe Bridge , Uttoxeter , Tutbury , Derby , Nottingham , Grantham and Skegness .

The station had two main platforms for through services (platforms 1 and 2). There is a short northbound terminal platform (3) and a passing line (for freight trains) in the centre (actually bypassing the southbound platform line). A disused goods yard lies behind the northbound platform (the North Stafford hotel is across the road behind the southbound platform).

The station to the north of Stoke-on-Trent was Etruria , which was finally closed for passengers on Friday September 30th 2005.
