The Stockholm Archipelago ( of Sweden , and one of the biggest Archipelago s of the Baltic Sea . It stretches from Stockholm and approximately 60 Kilometer s to the east, bordering Alandia . It consists of approximately 24 000 Island s and Islet s. It mainly follows the coastline of the provinces Sodermanland and Uppland . In 1719 the archipelago was estimated to have a population of 2.900 people, mostly Fishermen . Nowadays the archipelago mainly serves as a cluster of islands used by people on holiday. The biggest town of the archipelago, apart from Stockholm , is Vaxholm . The landscape of the archipelago is often considered impressive and unique. It has been shaped - and is still shaped - by the Land Elevation , which raises the land by about five Millimeter s every year. The village of Ytterby , famous among chemists for naming no fewer than four Chemical Element s ( Erbium , Terbium , Ytterbium and Yttrium ), is situated in the Stockholm Archipelago. Many poets, authors and artists have been influenced and fascinated by the Stockholm archipelago. Among them are August Strindberg , Ture Nerman , Ernst Didring and Aleister Crowley .
