Information About

State Great Hural

The State Great Khural (Sometimes '''Hural''' or translated as '''Assembly''')
is the Parliament of Mongolia . It represents the Legislative together with the governement. Other than in many other countries, there is only one parliamentary chamber.

SUFFRAGE

Each of the 76 members represents its own constituency, and gets elected by simple majority for a term of four years. The election is only valid if 50 % of the electorate have voted. Mongolian citizens are allowed to vote with the age of 18 if they are living in Mongolia. They may be elected from the age of 25.

CHAIRPERSON

The members of parliament elect the chairperson among their own. He executes the roles of the speaker of the legislative as well as the deputy of the president, and is ranked second in the hierarchy of the state after the latter. The chairperson supervises the sessions of the parliament, and is responsible for its voting procedures. He automatically (ex officio) becomes a member of the national security council.

TASKS

The Great State Khural draws up new laws together with the governement, and decides on their introduction. The parties represented in parliament nominate the candidates for the direct election of the president. The parliament confirms the prime minister (proposed by the president) and the other ministers. It can vote against the veto of the president with a 2/3 majority. The same is also necessary for a change of the constitution.

LATEST ELECTION

The chairman since 2005 is Tsendiin Nyamdorj .
