Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain is an attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California , that opened on July 17 , 1989 ; at the Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, Florida , that opened on July 17 , 1992 ; and at Tokyo Disneyland in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan that opened on October 1 , 1992 .

The attraction is based on the Disney film '' Song Of The South ''. Each Splash Mountain features a 52-and-a-half foot drop at a 45 degree angle into the Briar Patch. Splash Mountain was inspired, and includes songs from ''Song of the South'' such as '' Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah ''.

ATTRACTION WALKTHROUGH

The ride presents disconnected scenes taken from the animated segments of '' Song Of The South ''. The queue officially begins just after guests pass the view of the drop. However, it's not unusual to find the line backed up all the way to the entrance of Critter Country. The queue leads down and around the side of the mountain, underneath a railroad trestle bridge across which the Disneyland Railroad trains rumble and finally through the doors of a barn-like structure. Inside the place is decorated with antique farm equipment. A large fireplace, very much like the one Uncle Remus told stories by, is at one end. As the guests pass the fireplace, rustic wooden plaques with sayings like, "Now this tale didn't happen yesterday, nor the day before, but long, long ago..." begin to set the mood. Briefly, the queue heads outside again as it takes the guests up a set of stone stairs to the barn's upper level. If we look to the right as we head up the steps, we will see a carved wooden statue of Brer Rabbit , Brer Fox and Brer Bear .

On the second floor of the barn. The guests head down a passage and then turn right into the side of the mountain. After passing through a brief tunnel, they find themselves back out in daylight. An opening in the rock wall to the right gives them their first view of the loading area, which they soon reach. They finally reach the loading area where they board their ride vehicles, which are hollowed-out logs with Brer Rabbit's head carved into the very bow of the logs. The guests then set sail for adventure.

The logs cruise forward through a shed (the standard safety spiel is heard here, spoken in a Goofy -style voice). The logs mount a short lift hill. After they level off from this harmless climb, the guests emerge from the mountain into Old Mill Pond and float in a semi-circle around the Briar Patch , providing an excellent view of the other logs descending the big drop — the guests' future!

Now the guests enter a mill with a creaky turning waterwheel on the side. Inside the mill, they mount a second lift hill through it. All around, they see a barn owl hooting as they pass. Leveling off, you emerge once again. All around, you hear in the background the music of one of the ''Song of the South'''s songs, "How Do You Do?" This time, the guests are higher than before and they pass by some antique farming equipment, as well as a few critter dwellings, such as those for Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox (whose dwelling is balanced on a bluff above the guests). They also slosh around a wide turn which gives them a magnificent view of the park.

They then move into an opening in the mountain that is alongside the five-story waterfall. They pass by Brer Bear's dwelling, where the bear can be heard inside, snoring away. The guests then go over the first waterfall (namely "Slip'n Falls"). At the bottom of the flume, they reenter the mountain.

Inside, the guests are in the very heart of colorful Bayou country. Several bullfrogs and geese are fishing and singing "How Do You Do?" They pass Brer Frog relaxing on the back of an alligator while fishing. They then pass a hastily-built trap built by Brer Fox and Brer Bear. This was a trap intended for Brer Rabbit. But the trap had been sprung instead by Brer Bear, who is hanging from the trap. An angry Brer Fox stands behind him, yelling at him to get down.

They pass Brer Rabbit who is standing outside the boarded-up door to his home deep in the Briar Patch with a knapsack over his shoulder, ready to leave for parts unknown.

They then pass by numerous other animals such as Brer Turtle and Brer Alligator, all trying to hitch a ride with them. The guests also pass underneath a railroad trestle bridge across which Brer Rabbit is driving a handcar.

Next, the guests then pass by some signs that warn them they are heading for the Laughing Place. Brer Rabbit himself is hiding behind a bush laughing his head off. They come upon Brer Bear directly above them peering into a tree hollow. They pass beneath his giant buttocks and plunge headlong down a waterfall into darkness as they hear him exclaim, "There's nothing in here but bees!"

They then shoot back up and are now in a subterranean tunnel of root-infested caverns filled with beehives and buzzing bees swarming around them. Also "How Do You Do?" is no longer heard, as it has been replaced by another song heard in ''Song of the South'', "Everybody's Got a Laughing Place." The guests are in Brer Rabbit's Laughing Place. Nearby, they see Brer Bear, who is rocking left and right with his nose jammed up in a beehive. He is howling in pain and Brer Rabbit is rocking with laughter. Then you pass by some more animals who are singing "Laughing Place." A dog spins around in a rowboat and a stork plays a spider web like a harp.

But then, they next pass by both Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit, who's in a tight spot; a sticky honey hive had been plopped down over his head by the fox. Brer Rabbit keeps pleading for Brer Fox to set him free. All of a sudden, the mood changes and everything becomes more somber. Off to the port and starboard sides of the log, the guests see some of Brer Rabbit's family and friends, including Mrs. Mole and Mrs. Rabbit singing telling their children, in song, the dangers of the Laughing Place and that Brer Rabbit should not be messing with Brer Fox and Brer Bear.

Above them, the guests see a branch with two vultures taunting them about what lies in store for them and Brer Rabbit. Passing below the branch, they begin the long, slow climb up through Brer Fox's hideaway. As they near the top, they see Brer Rabbit all tied up and menaced by the ominous shadow of Brer Fox. Brer Rabbit pleads, "Please don't fling me in that Briar Patch!" "That's just where you're going," the fox replies.

Finally, the lift carries the log over the peak, through a hole in the mountain which takes the guests out into daylight. They pause for a split second at the peak of the hill and take in the ''spectacular'' view of the whole park, the Matterhorn dominating the skyline. They then plunge down the inevitable, five-story waterfall! Down, down, down the flume they go, right into the Briar Patch down below. Halfway down, a light, that is especially visible at night, flashes. The flash means that a hidden camera is taking their picture, which they can buy as a souvenir at the end of the voyage. Then... ''SPLLLOOOOOOSH!!!!'' They land in the Briar Patch.

The guests go through a tunnel and around a wide turn, part of which goes through the Rivers of America and start crusing slowly back toward the mountain. All around they hear " Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah ", which is also from ''Song of the South''. A few minutes later, they reenter the mountain. All around, animals of many sizes, shapes and species, including alligators, chickens, pigs and foxes are either playing musical instruments or dancing on the rocking Zip-A-Dee-Lady riverboat. They are all singing "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah." They are celebrating Brer Rabbit's last trick; the Briar Patch is where he lives.

Nearby, the guests see that Brer Fox and Brer Bear have received their comeuppance, between the briar bushes and an alligator that's got a hold of the fox by his tail. And relaxing at home in the Briar Patch, Brer Rabbit explains the Briar Patch is where he lives and that that's where he will stay.

Past the Patch, the guests (although not used in Disneyland anymore) see a screen which has on it constantly-changing pictures of themselves going down the flume. If they want to buy a copy of the picture shown on the screen, they must remember the corresponding number so they can tell it to the cast member at the photo spot outside the ride.

Then the log floats back into the station. The guests get out and go down an exit tunnel where they see the pictures of each log full of guests going down the flume. It is outside of this room that the guests may purchase the picture.

SPLASH MOUNTAIN PHOTOS AND FLASHES

During the 52 1/2 foot plummet, a Camera takes pictures of park guests in their log. Other Disney attractions that are equipped with souvenir photos are Disneyland's Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear Astroblasters , Disney-MGM Studios ' Rock 'n' Roller Coaster , Disney-MGM Studios' and Disney's California Adventure Park 's Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror , Disney's California Adventure Park's California Screamin' Disney's Animal Kingdom 's DINOSAUR and Epcot 's Test Track .

This attraction has become very famous for a picture-taking ride, and a source of controversy. Female guests occasionally "flash" the camera exposing their Breasts . Although Disney staff members usually discard the images, resulting in the displayed picture being "washed away". It has been suggested that some Disney staff members save them for personal use as some have leaked onto the Internet. The resulting controversy resulted in the ride getting the nickname "Flash Mountain".

After the initial controversy over release of "Flash Mountain" pictures onto the Internet Disney announced it was taking steps to prevent future leaks.
