Space Construction Vehicle (starcraft)

The T-280 SCV (Space Construction Vehicle) is the Fictional basic Terran construction unit in the Computer Game StarCraft . Possessing a Fusion torch, the SCV is capable of constructing Terran buildings, mining resources from Mineral formations and Vespene Refineries, repairing damaged Terran structures or Terran mechanical units, and also possesses limited attack capabilities. The SCV is slightly more robust than either the Protoss Probe or the Zerg Drone (60 HP for the SCV compared to 40 for the Probe and Drone).

In addition to constructing Terran bases, SCVs were also used in the construction of the Space Platforms orbiting certain Terran planets, especially the reconstruction of the Tarsonis platform.

For game purposes, SCVs possess aspects of both mechanical and biological units. This means that the Terran Medic's Heal ability and the Science Vessel's Irradiate ability will affect the SCV, while SCVs are also capable of repairing each other. They are also vulnerable to all special abilities, that affect biological or mechanical units.

While an SCV constructs a building, it hovers over the construction site. This means that it will occupy an SCV to create a building, but it will not be lost, like a Zerg drone. However, it is less efficient than a Protoss probe; if the SCV is destroyed while the building is under construction, the construction will be stopped, until either another SCV can be dispatched to complete it, the building is destroyed or canceled.

SCVs are also invaluable support units in a Terran assault force because they are quite robust for a worker and they can repair mechanical units, construct bunkers, missile turrets, and engineering bays (usually used to provide vision of nearby cliffs, so tanks are able to shoot on the enemies above).

SCVs have the ability to carry campaign items such as Psi-emitter s or data disks. Like other workers, SCVs do not trigger Spider Mines.

There is a discussion around the unit's in-game portrait: some claim the SCV pilot is an African-American . Others suggest the SCV is piloted by the Terran Civilian , who is simply presented in dim light(Another possibility is that the pilot is a Multiracial person). Although seemingly trivial on its own, the discussion is part of a larger debate about fair representation of Ethnic Groups in StarCraft.
