History

Southwestern was founded in 1893, under the name Keene Industrial Academy. It became Southwestern Junior College in 1916, and again changed its name to Southwestern Union College in 1963, in anticipation of bachelor-level classes, offered starting in 1967. In 1977, the name again changed to Southwestern Adventist College to reflect its affiliation with the Adventist Church. In 1987, it began offering graduate courses, and in 1996, changed its name to Southwestern Adventist University.

Accreditation

Southwestern is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate, Bachelor's, and Master's degrees, and is also accredited by: the Council on Social Work Education; the General Conference Accrediting Association of SDA Schools, Colleges, and Universities; the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education; the Texas Education Agency; the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners; and the National League for Nursing.
