Songkhla ( Thai สงขลา) is a city in southern Thailand , near the border to Malaysia . Geographical location . As of the census of 2000 it had a population of 84.264.

Despite the fact that the neighboring city Hat Yai is much bigger, Songkhla is the capital (''Amphoe Mueang'') of the province Songkhla.

Due to its location at the opening of the big Songkhla Lake to the Gulf Of Thailand , Songkhla is a fishing town and also an important harbour.

Songkhla was sometimes known as Singgora.

In December 1941. The Japanese army was landing here and towards the west.
