Information About

Solomon Perel

After the invasion of Poland by Germany in 1939, Solomon and one of his brothers Isaak attempted an escape to Soviet occupied Poland. Only Solomon was successful and joined a Komsomol run orphanage in Grodno . He was parted from his orphanage in the upheavel of the German invasion of the Soviet Union and captured by a German army unit. Having been born in Germany, Solomon was able to convince his captors that he was from a Volksdeutsche region and so he was accepted into his captors' unit as an interpreter.

Solomon was sent to a Hitler Youth school for training where he continued to hide his true identity under the name of Josef Perjell. Near the end of the war he surrendered himself to the Soviet Army and was reunited with his brother. The rest of his family had died at the hands of the Nazis. In 1948 he resettled in Israel .

He later wrote a book about his exploits, called "Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon" (I was Hitler Youth Salomon). The book was later adapted into the 1990 film '' Europa Europa ''. Solomon often tours and gives talks throughout Europe about his wartime experiences.
