Information About

Soar Valley

North of Leicester, the A6 Trunk Road follows the river. The road now runs right across the floodplain cutting across the meanders, but originally ran through the Soar Valley villages of Birstall Rothley , Mountsorrel and Quorn , which lie on the west side of the valley. On the East side lie Barrow Upon Soar , Cossington and Sileby . The valley then reaches Loughborough , with the river running to the East of the town, passing through the abandoned settlement of Cotes .

The river frequently merges and splits with the Grand Union Canal , and indeed the village of Barrow upon Soar is known for its canal heritage.

The river is joined near Rothley by the River Wreake and Rothley Brook .

The roads which cross the valley East-West regularly flood after heavy rain, although the A6 Trunk road is built on a bank, and therefore provides a "causeway" along the valley when the river is in full flood.
