Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix is Arizona 's main international airport, one of the largest aviation facilities in the American Southwest and the twelfth busiest airport in the world.

Sky Harbor has been operating under its unique name since prior to 1935, when it was purchased by the City of Phoenix. In the 1950 s it was serviced by four airline companies. Today, it serves as a hub for America West Airlines (now operating as US Airways ), as well as one of the largest departure points for Dallas -based Southwest Airlines . The airport is trying to follow in the footsteps of Los Angeles International Airport , Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport , Denver International Airport and San Francisco International Airport .

In 2005, the airport served 41.2M passengers.

Sky Harbor's private airplane area also serves as one of eight service centers for the Medevac airline Air Evac .

Sky Harbor has not had any major accidents occur at or near the airport. On August 16 , 1987 , Northwest Airlines Flight 255 , which was flying from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport near Detroit , Michigan , to John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana , California , with an intermediate stop at Sky Harbor, crashed on takeoff in Detroit, killing all of the passengers – including a large number of Phoenix-area residents – except for a young girl.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has three terminals, which are numbered 2, 3 and 4, since Terminal 1 (the original terminal from 1952 ) was torn down in 1990 . (The airport administration states that the designation Terminal 1 has been "retired," similar to the number of a famous athlete, and that it did not wish to renumber all the other terminals since passengers were already familiar with the numbers in place.)

Terminal 2, opened in 1962 , has one concourse and 19 gates. Terminal 3, opened in 1979, provides 23 gates on two concourses. Terminal 4, opened in 1990 and named after former Arizona Senator and 1964 Presidential candidate Barry M. Goldwater , provides 70 gates on seven concourses. Space is available for construction of an eighth concourse when it is needed.

A new Air Traffic Control tower is under construction. When it is completed in 2006 , it will be the tallest structure in the airport complex, at 335 feet (102 m).
