Leeds And Liverpool Canal . The town slogan is ''Gateway to the Dales'' (meaning the
Yorkshire Dales ). Skipton is
Twinned with the Bavarian town of
Simbach Am Inn . Skipton is the home of one of the best preserved
Medieval Castles in England dating back to the
11th Century . During the
English Civil War , the castle was the longest held
Royalist stronghold in
North England until its honourable surrender in December
1645 after a three years siege.
